MORE “TAKING THE FLAK” REVIEWS

“Taking the Flak” seems to be the BBC’s residential Marmite: love it or hate it. For the audience, looking at the conflicting reviews can be confusing:

John Preston, for example, really, really hates the show:

THE TELEGRAPH
“(…) As well as being unfunny in a kind of sky-darkening way, it’s eerily unlikeable. (…)”

War reporter John Simpson, on the other hand, really, really loves it – in the same paper:

THE TELEGRAPH
“(…) Good comedy is always sharp and painful, and this is television comedy at its best. (…)”

SUNDAY EXPRESS
“(…) I couldn’t fault this comedy. Indeed, it was the best satire on journalism since Drop The Dead Donkey and the first time the BBC has been truly honest about the way news is put together. (…)”

THE SCOTSMAN
“(…) A highly promising beginning… (…)”

THE TIMES ONLINE
“(…) What this should have been was hard satire. What it was was racist farce. (…)”

THE ROYAL

Tonight we’ll see if there’s any reason to continue watching The Royal, or if Nick and Marian have been written out of the show. I’ll keep you posted. No Damian, no screencaps, though.

TV TIP

Ultimate Force: “Killing of a one-eyed Bookie”

ITV4 will air one of Damian’s earliest and still finest performances on the small screen. Make sure to catch him as Sean Weir in “Killing of a One-Eyed Bookie” (2002) on Tuesday, 14 July, 9pm.

I’m a carnivore myself, but the cheap shots at vegetarians and vegans are beginning to grate on my nerves. Harharhar healthy food is icky, and sitar music in the background, so original and witty. I suppose the authors have never been to Tibits on Heddon Street in London. They should.

This just in: Hell froze over, pigs are flying and The Royal is back!

Incredible, but true:

THE ROYAL RETURNS TO ITV 1 ON SUNDAY, 21 JUNE!

ihare_03

For the last three episodes of season 7, that is. As for season 8: I have no idea. By now I’m convinced that ITV schedules its airing dates by flipping a coin or rolling the dice.

Edited: They have now, post-episode, changed the numbering of the series. So this is not S07E10, but S08E01. The mind, it boggles.

Here’s a brief summary for S08E01 “In The Air”:

Have Judith and her baby also been poisoned?

Will Rose lose his job and his friend in one day?

Does he see her as marriage material or just a casual fling?

Will Susie leave The Royal for good?

This is my favourite, though:

His body’s a temple, but he’d do anything for fish and chips.

That tagline ought to be printed on t-shirts!

“The Royal” returns!

Posted in the royal, tv with tags , , , , on 9 April, 2009 by ambarussa

Looks like I’ve been too early wishing you a Happy Easter, and on top of that, I lost my bet… not that I mind, though!

“The Royal” – and Damian O’Hare as Dr. Nick Burnett – will return to your screens on 21 June – on ITV1, sponsored by “Welcome to Yorkshire” (that would be the former Yorkshire Tourist board).

“(…) Welcome to Yorkshire will sponsor the upcoming 9 x 60-minute series of Heartbeat and the 6 x 60-minute new season of The Royal in a bid to help draw tourists to the north of England.

It is the first time the tourism board, formerly known as the Yorkshire Tourism Board, has sponsored a television programme. (…)”

“(…) The Royal, which depicts the life and times of a 1960s hospital, set in the heart of its Yorkshire community, returns on 21 June. (…)”

According to the report, the deal includes broadcast sponsorship on ITV1, catch-up content, online and bumper ads for mobile phone content.

Finally an innovative tourist board. Neat!

“Taking the Flak” scheduled for this summer…

Posted in taking the flak, the royal, tv with tags , , , , on 6 April, 2009 by ambarussa

… not for spring, unless the progamme for BBC2 should change. Also, Damian O’Hare will be in more than one episode.

The Royal: At the moment, new episodes are rumoured to be shown in June.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

I put £5 on further changes. Bets are accepted.
